Host of the module

The module is held in a collaboration between the Department of Physiotherapy at the University College of Northern Denmark and two acknowledged Danish research environments focusing on research and development activities within physiotherapy in an international perspective:
Department of Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy, Aalborg Hospital, Aarhus University hospital, Center for Sensory-Motor Interaction, Aalborg University and Arkadens Clinic of Physiotherapy.
 

Theme and profile of the module

The future expectations and demands for documentation of services in the healthcare system put considerable demands on the physiotherapy profession. As a part of the toning and strategy at the Department of Physiotherapy at University College and Northern Denmark it is essential to collaborate with research environments within physiotherapy.
During this elective module it is possible to spend four in an acknowledged research environment.

 

Learning prerequisites

Physiotherapy students who have passed module tests 1-12 (incl) and international students with the same prerequisites. 
 

Purpose and learning outcomes

  • At the end of the module, the students should have achieved the following outcomes:
  • Be able to account for specific knowledge of and insight into one or more relevant research areas within physiotherapy 
  • Be able to apply and critically relate to national/international research-based knowledge
  • Have insight into and experience with relevant scientific qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection, data processing and data description 
  • Have knowledge of the basic concepts within research/philosophy/theory and scientific methods to be able to develop and document physiotherapy 
  • Have insight into and understanding of the importance of including research ethical principles when working with development and research 
  • Be able to take part in a critical discussion of the field of research, the methods and relevance for the physiotherapy profession and the Danish healthcare system 
  • Be able to take part in discussions of the international coherence and perspective of the research 
  • Be able to relate to and include the above learning outcomes in the bachelor project and in the future performance of the profession

Learning activities

The students are expected to be enterprising and participate actively in the module as the students are involved in the concrete planning and running of the elective module. The students must be able to work independently and be active in their studies. It will be possible to act as a ”research assistant”, participate in various types of data collection/analyses and methods as well as discussions concerning ongoing research projects and possibly the student’s own bachelor project.

 

Content

Activities and concrete content will depend on the current research activities in the research units.

 

Timing of elective modules (week numbers)

- Spring: weeks 8-11, both weeks included. 
- Autumn: weeks 37-40, both weeks included.

 

The elective module runs for four weeks and can be combined with other elective modules. 
 

Literature:

Compulsory literature for the physiotherapy education at the University College of Northern Denmark is expected to read. In addition there will be some extra literature and information searching included in the module.
Research literature, recommended by lecturers.

Evalutation:

Portfolio examination. The evaluation takes place at the students' home institution using the 7-point grading scale.

Evaluation will follow the guidelines at the students’ own education programme.
